When walking into a building, one does not usually take the liberty of looking up, but what we have discovered as a group is that throughout Europe the ceilings add to the ornamentation and intricacy of a building’s architectural features. We have also discovered that ceilings tell a story. The topic of ceilings is a perfect collaboration of our group’s interests: Jess’s love for art, Alexander’s interest in architecture, Brielle’s fascination with symbolism, and Dan’s ability to capture beauty through photography. As you move through this digital art gallery, we desire to share not only our personal experiences, but also the artistic meanings intended by the artists.
This blog reveals the meanings of several ceiling, from the Basilica of St. Ignatius, to Westminster Abbey, all the way to the Jesuit church in Switzerland, and many others. Throughout this heavenly journey, we will shed light on some of the most fascinating, decorative, and structurally sound ceilings across Europe. While explaining the details, symbolism, and artist’s perspective on each ceiling, we also intend to exhibit our personal experiences while studying abroad.
Therefore, each entry will be used as a road map to display the places we have traveled and the elements we have seen. As we have uncovered the importance of art and the meaning behind a ceiling, we hope to fuel a desire to gaze heavenward and to ponder over the details in the rafters that many artists have left above.
